Summary: In the fine short-fic Je Ne Regrette Rien by my friend Violinplayer, Mozenrath met a painful, premature death alone in his citadel. This song is written from the POV of the only person who might have mourned him; a hypothetical sibling of your own choosing. It is based on the song “Business Goes on as Usual as sung by the Chad Mitchell Trio.
-------
Business goes on as usual,
The sales and the profits are high.
I’ve a smiling face
In Agrabah’s marketplace
For everyone who happens to go by.
-
Business goes on as usual,
Except that my brother is dead.
He was thirty-five
And very much alive,
But the dreams have all been blasted from his head
-
In a dim, dark land
Where he lost his right hand,
Where he fought in a war
I did not understand,
-
And business goes on as usual.
There’s plenty to choose from the rack,
And the rumor goes
The latest thing in clothes
Is midnight black.
-
Business goes on as usual,
Despite this queer ache in my heart
For my brother’s death.
Until my final breath
I’ll never know what kept us so apart.
-
Business goes on as usual.
My children are down in the square.
My son looks at me,
And I wonder silently,
“Did he know his nephew has his curly hair?
-
Under starless skies
When I soothe my baby’s cries,
I wonder if she’ll ever care
That she has her uncle’s eyes.
-
But business goes on as usual.
There’s plenty to choose from the rack.
Though my brother’s gone
Our lives keep going on
Under skies of midnight black.
