Veritas et Aequitas

A summer midnight breeze brushed the balcony curtains leading towards the Princess’s chambers. Shadows danced across the still room as silver moonlight reflected through the opened bay windows. A few feet away the Princess laid peacefully, sleeping soundly in the security of her dreams. Beside her bedside, Rajah suddenly raised his head from his slumber, his senses alert with the presence of a strange, unfamiliar guest. His mouth twisted into a growl as his muscles tensed, preparing to pounce.

The guest was amused as he merely waved his hand while calmly giving a simple command.

“Somnus.”

Rajah’s eyes immediately fell into a deep sleep again. The sorcerer stepped over the unconscious tiger ... a small, amused smile teasing his lips. He moved with a natural swiftness to the Princess’s bedside, every step sheltered within the darkness.

His shadowed eyes lingered for a moment on her shallow breaths drenched with heavy sleep in the darkness. Silently, he reached into his robes and retrieved an ancient glowing sapphire sphere painted intricately with golden lands and azure seas. The sorcerer’s hands released the object into the air and the sphere hovered freely on its own as he closed his eyes momentarily in thought. Past and present disappeared seamlessly into one another, until the two were one and the same. His voice chanted softly, a very dark intentioned spell.

“Freeze the seas of Time,
To reverse Fates of Ancient
Rhymes.
Love forgotten and Lost,
Take the ultimate Cost.
Trade Happiness with Despair,
Broken beyond Repair.”

Abruptly the sphere froze in midair and shifted directions, spinning faster and faster in reverse. The vibrant colors had faded from gold and sapphire into a shimmering pale violet...

The scene around him rapidly dissolved into blackness....as reality faded to suspended nothingness. Everything around him came away until he only existed in emptiness from time and space. Slowly colors and light reappeared, and his eyes adjusted to his place in another time.

Time had rippled in backwards form and before his eyes was a mere child resting in a deep sleep. Jasmine was only five years old.

Without another word, he removed a small glass vile tied with a silver chain around his neck. Vapor swirled against the smooth walls of the glass and emitted with a natural pearl glow.

He bent down closer to the princess, repeating the same sleeping spell as he had earlier that night to prevent her from waking. His hands moved deliberately in concentration as he opened the glass vile mere inches from her heart.

“Corruptio optimi pessima.” he said in a soft voice, closing his eyes carelessly without thought.

For a moment the vapor rose from the top of the glass, hovering a few feet above the ground as it mixed with the coolness of the midnight air. At his words, the vapors transformed into a thin tangible substance, spinning and connecting rapidly to create hundreds of tiny fragile weblike strings. Every string twisted together... tightening and wrapping around another, again and again, thousands of times within a few minutes.

The vapors spun an intricate bond with each other, becoming a small, solid white bracelet.

Satisfied with his work the Sorcerer held the bracelet in his bare hands, running his fingertips carefully over the smooth flawless metal. The bracelet felt cool at his touch and gleamed with power.

He kneeled beside the princess still sleeping in dreams. The bracelet slid easily over her slim wrists and rested lightly upon her skin.

“Open your heart to these eternal words, here and now the light gives way to darkness. With this spell, you are forever mine.”

His voice echoed solely with a heartbreaking sound of chained sorrow.
He spoke his next words barely above a whisper, meant only for her to hear.

“Goodnight, my princess.”

Without another word he was gone, leaving only behind a message that would soon twist into reality.

“The corruption of the best is the worst of all.”
