The Poem-written by Rebecca Rand

The Morning After

“What…? Where am I…?” he thought to himself, thinking he was still in his hovel.
It all of a sudden came back to him like sunshine does after a rainstorm. His marriage to Jasmine, and their magical night together. He looked down to where his beautiful wife was. She was still soundly sleeping in his arms. Aladdin sighed. He was surely the luckiest man in the entire universe. Jasmine was the most beautiful, wonderful, understanding, loyal, funny, smart, kind, selfless, enchanting woman he’d ever met. Words simply could not describe her. He suddenly had the amazing idea to write a poem for her. He’d remembered how, sometime after he had defeated Jafar, he and Jasmine were in the garden and she’d admitted to loving poetry. “That is what I’ll do, he thought, “I’ll write a poem for Jasmine!”
Aladdin had never been very good with poetry, but for Jasmine he could do anything. He would do absolutely anything to make her happy. Quietly sneaking out of bed, Aladdin walked down to the library for a paper and pen. He’d decided to write it near Jasmine for inspiration. She always told him to go after his dreams, to not be afraid, because she would always catch him if he fell. “Ok…what can I start with? Dear Jasmine? My dearest Jasmine? Dearest Jasmine, the person I hold closest to my heart… I like that one…” he thought.

“Dearest Jasmine, the person I hold closest to my heart,
I love you…I love you…?”
“No. How about…I first met you in the marketplace. Yes. It will be a poem of our love story, in a way. I like that.” Aladdin thought.
He crumpled up another couple of pieces of paper, and finally settled for a poem which he thought was pretty good considering he’d never written a poem before in his life.

The finished version…

The poem

Dearest Jasmine, whom I hold closest to my heart,

I first met you in the marketplace,
And ever since then,
My life has been lived
To be with you.
You think I have
Endangered my life
Just to save yours
Way too many times.
Yet, my dearest Jasmine,
You have saved me more
Than you can imagine.
It is you
Who has forever saved me
From my solitude,
My boring life,
Which has been lived
To steal food.
But Jasmine, you have saved me
From something even bigger than that.
You have saved me
From my horrid belief
That dreams don’t come true,
That love doesn’t exist.
You have showed me
That there is so much more to life
Than just living it
And accepting it as it is.
From you I have learnt
That when it comes to love
You can never accept anything but no.
This is why I have fought
So hard to keep you,
To forever embrace you,
To hold you in my arms.
I don’t care how you look,
How rich or poor you are.
I just care
That you saw me
Past the street rat that I was
And looked into my heart,
The one I’d concealed for much too long.
I love you more than all of the jewels in the world
And more than words can describe.
You are my most precious jewel,
Princess of my heart.
