I like to argue for female!Carpet for the sake of argument, but all the other characters call Carpet "he" and "him", Genie calls him "rug-man" sometimes, and in The Prophet Motive he was attracted to a feminine looking carpet, so, if magic carpets do have a gender, Carpet probably identifies as male.
Listen to them. As soon as they realize you don't need them anymore, they'll leave you alone.

The sad thing is that my fears have come true and my sophomore honors grammar teacher has finally taken her toll on my brain.

What's sad about understanding that, APK?

Yeah, we have no gender-neutral third-person singular pronoun that it's polite to use for people. It causes all kinds of problems. It's also why we keep using "them" instead of "him" or "her" as the possessive form even though it's grammatically incorrect.
Anyway, Carpet: I can see the confusion because he's not really very "macho"... he likes romantic stuff, he's polite, quiet (he doesn't have much choice over that part, but still ).
Actually, I wonder if there are any countries where they translate it so that carpet is female? Because most of the evidence comes from what other people call him. Maybe in one where the word "carpet" is feminine?

Well, you could LA alfombra, or EL tapete, but for a flying carpet, I guess you would use the feminine form of alfombra. You know, una alfombra voladora. You don't often hear un tapete volador.

Aaaah - I don't believe he does that in your taped version that I saw.
Yeah, I think only some of the Genies use that line. It's pretty common nowadays, but since it's an improv role, not all of them use it. I haven't had a chance yet to watch RU42's Aladdin edit over at VisionsFantastic yet, some I'm not sure which line is used in that one.

In German a carpet is male anyway, so we don't have much choice there.

That's one of those cases where I think the language is genuinely going to evolve so that it's correct, so I don't mind it so much.

After my mother's copy of Word hit me on the head a few times, I just started saying "him or her" or "him/her."
Unwieldy, I know, but it keeps the spellchecker (imaginary or otherwise) from whomping me.

Thanks, guys. We just call him "it" in our country, but that feels somehow rude in English.
